These titles represent sources of actual genealogical data, parish registers, monumental inscriptions, etc. In most cases they are secondary sources and therefore subject to transcription error. Questions or conflicts should always be resolved by reference to the original, or primary, data if, and when, it is available.
In addition to the material listed here, other source records are available from publications by Cumbria Family History Society, Roland Grigg, and others.

Parish registers were kept by English churches, recording the
events of the parish; baptisms, marriages and burials as well
as miscellaneous other information, including "presentments"
for moral indiscretions.
In the case of baptisms and marriages, parents names and residence
are often (usually) given and, in later years, the father's occupation.
Depending on the recorder, the mother's maiden name is sometimes
also provided.
In transcribing the registers from the originals in the Cumbria
County Record Office, the Castle, Carlisle, Mike Jackson indexed
each volume by full name and also by farm or residence. This book
includes a short history of the parish church and maps showing
"quarter" boundaries and many farm locations.
Check or money order in either case; unfortunately credit cards
are not accepted as this is not a large commercial venture!
The Knowe chapel is located within Bewcastle parish and many events
from each generation were recorded here rather than at the Church
of England church. Few, if any, of these records are in the Mormon
IGI or available from any other source.
As in the above case, Mike Jackson has transcribed the events
from the registers adding complete indexes by both full names
and place names. In the place index, he also provides the grid
location reference from the Ordnance Survey Maps, including many
for farms that no longer exist.
In contrast to the registers of the Established Church, the Knowe
registers also routinely include the date of birth as well as
baptism, providing the researcher with significantly more information.
An additional extraordinary resource is "Register of Names
Selected from the Copy of the Register of Baptisms, Number 1 (kept
by Revd William Tweedie at Knowe Manse in 1853) of Persons Baptized
Who Have Emigrated to America and Other Parts of the World and
Some Other Persons". The content of this document have been
incorporated into this register transcript.

Mike has recently completed a complete survey of the churchyard, in which he cross checked dates and names against the written records. The cross checking brought many surprises, in that ages, dates and spellings varied. This book records the monuments as they are, even when differences occur. Complete inscriptions, including any poems, Scripture, etc. are recorded in full. Mike was also able to uncover each of the stones stacked near the walls and record those inscriptions as well.
Previous to this survey, there were two others, the first by Alexander McCracken, which was compiled and indexed in 1973 by George Gilchrist, and the second in 1978 by Joseph Foster and David Downer. The first, which recorded only pre-1855 inscriptions, while the second, though useful is very basic.
This new survey runs to 73 pages including a four page plan of the stone's locations. It is indexed by name and by the placenames mentioned.
The price, from Mike at the address shown below, is £10.00, postpaid in the UK, £13.00 to North America, Australia/New Zealand or elsewhere. Checks in Sterling only please as Mike has no ability to accept other currencies.
Mike has put these pieces together, interpreting and commenting based on the experience gained over many years of reading literally hundreds of manorial and castle histories.
This is quite useful, and interesting, if you're researching in or near Bewcastle. It is available directly from the author:

Roxburghshire, Scotland
On his web site, http://www.maxwells.freeserve.co.uk/publishing/, Mr. Maxwell offers transcripts of the 1851 census for several Roxburghshire parishes. This county, in Scotland, immediately bordered Cumberland on the north. Currently these include:
As I have Bewcastle ancestors, I bought the Castleton transcripts as folks moved back and forth quite often. If you have an interest in Northern Cumberland, these might also interest and help to you. Maxwells accepts credit cards and ship worldwide. |
