This area will include sources for maps of the area. I hope to provide a listing of the various Ordnance Survey maps as well as antique and others that are available.
Several unique maps showing border families, reivers, clans and battlefields are described below.
If you offer, or know of an item that should be listed here, please let me know. Thanks.
![]() I found a page with a rather interesting History of the Ordnance Survey.
Pathfinder Series mapsThe Ordnance Survey Pathfinder series are 1:25,000 scale ( or 2½ inches to the mile) and perhaps of the most use to genealogists in that they show the location of the smaller details, including the most farms, churches and other sites helpful in understanding our ancestor's lives. The obvious disadvantage of this scale is that each map covers a smaller area. The Landranger series, in 1:50,000 scale covers more area with fewer details. iBS stocks Ordnance Survey maps and they can be purchased from the links shown below. I have extracted those from the NY series and will try to add others covering today's Cumbria. OS maps are, of course available from other sources. iBS is located in England and shipping charges are based on their location. If ordering from the States, a US source, such as David Morgan, may prove cheaper.
Landranger Series MapsThe Landranger series (1:50,000 or 1½ inches to the mile) cover a larger area than the Pathfinder series, but at the expense of some detail. The links below allow purchase from iBS, but these maps are also available from several other sources.
Global Corner BookstoreMaps from the Ordnance Survey series are of tremendous help to the genealogist as they provide names and locations of all significant sites including individual farms. While these maps are readily available within the U.K., they are harder to find in the U.S. and other countries. The Global Corner Bookstore, in Boston, offers the series, accepts credit cards, and ships worldwide.
Alan Godfrey MapsAlan Godfrey Maps offers reprints of the very early versions of the Ordnance Survey maps are useful in that they contain the older names and often show sites not shown on the modern editions. They are in the Victorian style and always interesting. To see if one is available for your area of interest, write:

David MorganDavid Morgan is located in Washington state and sells the various series of Ordnance Survey maps as well as clothing and Celtic items.
Reiver Maps
Border Art offers interesting antique style maps of the border area. One shows the Reiver Families and the areas in which each was prevalent and others the Clans, Families and Battlefields of Scotland. These maps may be of interest to border historians and genealogists and are sold throughout the border area. They may also be ordered at through their web site.
