The market town of Brampton lies about nine miles east of Carlisle and has been central to the area's history for centuries. Mr. Parsons has, for years, been collecting photographs depicting the town as it has changed. His collection has now been published in a well done, 96 page book. Many wonderful photographs are used with commentary based on the author's knowledge and the reflections of those donating their old photographs. He uses extracts from turn of the century Ordnance Survey maps to show where long gone buildings once stood. If you have an interest in Brampton, or ancestors from the area, this will be a welcome purchase. Its available from:

Softbound, pictorial cover £11.50
When, in 1996, The Changing Face of Brampton was published, the author was swamped with new material, both pictures and anecdotes, from many people. The result is here, the sister to the first book, to show the past and the changes that have occurred up to the present day - a record, containing over 150 photographs, often early and scarce, for the future. With an interest in Brampton, this too will be a welcome purchase. Its available from the author, as cited above, or from iBS (WH Smith), just click on the title link.

Lanercost
This is a quite scholarly work by the current President of the CWAAS. It contains copies of the charters, or title deeds, of Lanercost Priory, founded around 1169. The documents run from the foundation to 1364. Drawings assed to the Cartulary, possibly around 1400, are an unusual commentary by a vernacular artist. The Latin text is printed in full, and there are English headnotes as a guide to the contents of each document. All people and places, and many topics, can be traced with the help of the index. The bulk of this 480 page volume is in Latin, but an explanation of each document is provided in English. This is not light reading and will not be of too much use to a casual genealogist, especially as the period described predates most other available genealogical records. If you are fortunate enough to have traced your upper class ancestors to this period, it may well represent a good source. It is, of course, invaluable to researching the history of the Priory.
