In addition to the material listed here, other useful records are available from publications by Cumbria Family History Society, Roland Grigg, and others.
This is an excellent handbook for English research, with an emphasis on those working from the United States. It begins with an explanation of resources available in the U.S., such as the Mormon's microfilm collection and at major American libraries. Of course, the record sources in England are also covered in detail.
While this book covers where to find records, it goes beyond many other guides in providing very practical aids for the non expert genealogist. Examples of old abreviations, how to read early handwriting, and even a list of key words translated from American to English English! Like others, this guide covers the basics, but it also gives much additional information, making it one of the most useful for day to day research.
Cumbria Archive ServiceA number of publications are available from the Cumbria Archive Service. A leaflet is available describing the items and providing current prices. Some of the items of most interest to genealogists are:
The new, 3d Edition is now out and includes recent additions to available material as well as the new Whitehaven Record Office. It may not yet be listed with iBS Cumbrian Ancestors, Notes for Genealogical Searchers, 3d edition. Published by the Cumbria Archive Service, this introduces the Cumbrian records that are of most use for tracing your ancestors. It includes detailed appendices listing current holdings of registers from Church of England, Roman Catholic and non-conformist churches. A large separate map of Church of England parishes in Cumbria is included. (96 pages) (ed. note) This is an essential tool for Cumbria research, even if you're using the Mormon's film and not visiting the CRO. If you're researching in Cumbria; get this book. Parish map: Church of England Parishes in Cumbria, 1829, 3d edition. Published by the Archive Service. This map is included with Cumbrian Ancestors, but may be purchased separately.
In Search of Your British and Irish Roots
One of the classic's, this is a great, general purpose manual on researching in the British Isles and includes sections on each of the counties. Where the Handy Book above, covers only England (very well), Baxter includes the other countries too.
Your English Ancestry : A Guide for North Americans
This book is written specifically for the North American researching in England. Irvine describes the records available here and includes information on where to find them. The appendices provide useful references, addresses and a description of material available from the Mormons
Tracing Your Family HistoryComment by Margaret Russell in the Cumbria FHS Journal, November 1997: This book is of value to family historians even if you have been researching for yesrs you will find something of interest.
Genealogocal Evidence
The authoritative book on how to cite sources in genealogy. "Evidence! provides librarians, archivists and others a manual to hand genealogists as a solid guide, to make research easier for themselves and future readers."--Eric G. Grundset, M.L.S. Director, Daughters of the American Revolution Library; Vice President, National Genealogical Society. "Evidence! is for all of us--the novice, the experienced family historian, and those who come into genealogy from other academic environments. The wide-ranging citation formats cover not only traditional sources but the latest technological ones."--Cameron Allen, J.D. Professor Emeritus of Law, Rutgers University; President, American Society of Genealogists
Cite Your Sources
A new work, Evidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historial, (see above) has recently been published by Elizabeth S. Mills, the editor of the National Genealogical Society's scholarly journal, the NGS Quarterly. It is published by Genealogical Publishing Company and should be widely available. Though it has recently listed by amazon.com it does not yet appear in the inventory of iBS.
Latin for Family Historians
Marriage Laws, Rites, Records and Customs
Microfiche PublicationsThis is a listing of the microfiche publications of all of the various Family History Socities that are members of the FFHS. Though the Cumbria Family History Society has no fiche publications, many other societies do and this should be a useful catalog.
