Handy Book to English Genealogy

Handy Book amazon.com Handy Book to English Genealogy, Rachael Mellen, Heritage Books, Baltimore, MD, 1990, ISBN: 1 5561 359 6.

This is an excellent handbook for English research, with an emphasis on those working from the United States. It begins with an explanation of resources available in the U.S., such as the Mormon's microfilm collection and at major American libraries. Of course, the record sources in England are also covered in detail.

While this book covers where to find records, it goes beyond many other guides in providing very practical aids for the non expert genealogist. Examples of old abreviations, how to read early handwriting, and even a list of key words translated from American to English English! Like others, this guide covers the basics, but it also gives much additional information, making it one of the most useful for day to day research.

amazon.comEvidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historial, Elizabeth S. Mills, Genealogical Publishing Co., 1997, ISBN 0806315431.

The authoritative book on how to cite sources in genealogy.
Elizabeth Shown Mills' new book, Evidence!, provides the family history researcher with a reliable standard for both the correct form of source citation and the sound analysis of evidence. "Successful research--research that yields correct information with a minimum of wasted time and funds--depends upon a sound analysis of evidence. Source citation is fundamental, but it is not enough... Research, evidence, citation, and analysis are inseparable. Evidence is the vehicle that moves our research from curiosity to reality. Evidence! offers a road map for beginners, who hope to avoid mistakes, and guideposts for the advanced, who already appreciate the need to map their own course precisely. . . . "

"Evidence! provides librarians, archivists and others a manual to hand genealogists as a solid guide, to make research easier for themselves and future readers."--Eric G. Grundset, M.L.S. Director, Daughters of the American Revolution Library; Vice President, National Genealogical Society. "Evidence! is for all of us--the novice, the experienced family historian, and those who come into genealogy from other academic environments. The wide-ranging citation formats cover not only traditional sources but the latest technological ones."--Cameron Allen, J.D. Professor Emeritus of Law, Rutgers University; President, American Society of Genealogists

Cite Your Sources

Cite Your Sources amazon.comCite Your Sources: A Manual for Documenting Family Histories and Genealogical Records, Richard S. Lackey, University of Mississippi, 1986, ISBN: 0878052860.

iBS Cite Your Sources is also available from iBS.

This work has been the standard text for source citation since its publication. Unfortunately, Mr. Lackey died soon after publication and his work has not been updated to reflect the emerging sources not envisioned seventeen years ago.

A new work, Evidence! Citation & Analysis for the Family Historial, (see above) has recently been published by Elizabeth S. Mills, the editor of the National Genealogical Society's scholarly journal, the NGS Quarterly. It is published by Genealogical Publishing Company and should be widely available. Though it has recently listed by amazon.com it does not yet appear in the inventory of iBS.
