Mike Jackson has authored a series of gazeteers covering castles in a number of England's counties. Each is wonderfully complete, providing a record of each county's known medieval castles, existing or destroyed, together with their location, a brief description and a condensed history.
For the book's purposes, a "castle" is any fortification founded between 1066 and 1600 which has always been called, or generally termed, a castle and any building for which a Licence to Crenellate was issued.
The books in this series are available from iBS, and can be shipped to the U.S.
Given the turbulant nature of Cumbria's history, many of the dwellings indicated in parish registers, etc. are found listed in this excellent volume. It can be a valuable resource in tracing families, especially near the border regions.
