Mike Jackson has authored a series of gazeteers covering castles in a number of England's counties. Each is wonderfully complete, providing a record of each county's known medieval castles, existing or destroyed, together with their location, a brief description and a condensed history. For the book's purposes, a "castle" is any fortification founded between 1066 and 1600 which has always been called, or generally termed, a castle and any building for which a Licence to Crenellate was issued.
